WHY: There absolutely is something for everyone. Handmade trinkets are one-of-a-kind and unique. … Ah, there’s a hand-crafted rhinestone carousel horse. And Tempest is a force that you have to meet.

You’re in love too, right? Tempest does her own make-up & even dyes her own hair!! She mixes her own dyes using brands like Manic Panic. Basically – if you need a hair or make-up tip, drop by and talk with Tempest. She’s better than most pros. (I mean, look.)

Nineteen-year-old Tempest Paige puts the bad-assery into business owner and sells J-POP (Japanese pop) fashion and handcrafted Lolita jewelry and trinkets—think sweet with a cherry-on-top–at her boutique, Sweet Poison Cupcake Designs, in The Village Gate.

A typical Rochesterian who graduated from Spencerport and attends MCC, Tempest is not. Enchanting eyes, candy tresses, and a style that includes Cosplay and Sweet Lolita: Tempest channels every doll you wish you could have played with. “It’s not Halloween anymore!” gawkers taunted.

In the 7th grade, Tempest dressed as black-bob Britney Spears alla “Womanizer” for a school dance and at Otakon 2012, transformed into Jessica Rabbit. “Bullying never really bothered me,” Tempest admits.

“My mom raised me to be strong. Not to care about those who don’t care about me.”

Shaun, Tempest’s mom, an airbrush artist and painter, is credited for hand-gluing 100s of rhinestones onto the SPC carousel horse. She also helped Tempest begin SPC in 2009. … Tempest was in 8th grade!

After various Conventions, including RIT’s Tora-Con in 2009, SPC officially opened in April 2014. When a Village Gate storefront hit the market, a twist of fate baked Tempest her cake. The, “I don’t know middle ground,” attitude means she eats it, too.

Back when I converted from Barbara Ellen Writes to Barbara Ellen Shops Local, I lost some content because … I did it wrong. {That’s what happens when you go rouge on Capra Strategy. Don’t do it. But know that if you did, they will fix everything you don’t totally bomb.} That means the 1st feature I posted on Treasure Trove Vintage is history.

Or you get some more. And that is where Treasure Trove Vintage + Anjolee DeMaroux Photography come in. I interviewed my insanely rad friends: curator and owner Morgan DeLapa on her vintage boutique + Renaissance woman photographer Anjolee DeMaroux, who also did my hair + make-up + helped me giggle as I sauntered the streets of Park Ave.

These women are what’s up.

“Do I really want to do this or is it just a fun side project to distract me from being an adult?”

STYLE Knowing Treasure Trove Vintage and owner Morgan DeLapa only make sense if you know and understand Morgan’s insanely unique and polished, eclectic and put-together style. She makes Brooklynites + Upper East Siders jealous, and baby doesn’t even live in NYC. {Even though it is her favorite city.} To keep track I follow her blog: The Treasure Trove.

I honestly cannot even handle Morgan’s natural cool. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

BEGINNINGS It’s almost impossible to believe it when you see the collection at Treasure Trove and when you imagine all of the pieces Morgan, herself, owns. But Morgan DeLapa began acquiring vintage pieces just 5 years ago, in 2009. On the first vintage dress c. 1970’s she bought back in high school, Morgan explains: “It’s ridiculously ugly but beautiful at the same time.” Therein lies the crux of the infatuation with vintage. Sometimes it’s beautiful, and sometimes it’s a beautiful disaster. Thing is, with pieces from Treasure Trove Vintage, you’re going to stun.

“I wanted to give them a new home that wasn’t the dumpster. I thought they were so great, that they had to be shared with the world.”

In 2010 Morgan started her blog. When she began buying vintage pieces that were not just her size, she started selling on eBay in 2011. Shortly after, Morgan opened her first shop in Honeoye Falls in the photography studio her mother owned.

“It was my dream to have a store on Park Ave.”

When a listing opened up on Park Avenue in 2013, Morgan was reluctant to check-out the then Peppermint space. “I was looking more in the South Wedge because of price,” and, on the size of the shop, Morgan was, “worried she wouldn’t have enough to restock.”

But some things are just meant to be.

The building owner wanted another clothing shop to rent. Morgan named her price. She got it. The lease was signed in April 2013. Treasure Trove Vintage opened May 4, 2013.

“If I don’t do this now, someone else will.”

THE STORE When you walk into Treasure Trove Vintage, located in a building whose address is Park Ave with storefront facing Meigs–{think original location of Shop Peppermint}–you walk into a wonderland. It’s like being 5 and stepping into you grandmother’s, your aunt’s, and your mom’s closets–when all of those people are some of the coolest people you know–looking up, and being mesmerized. You want to wear the red glossy heels even if they are a few sizes to big because they just make you feel amazing.

Morgan describes her boutiques as a “curated vintage shop.” This means that she chooses only select pieces, between the 1900’s to the 1990’s (no later than 1994). It also means that, when she started, she was worried she wouldn’t have enough pieces to keep in-stock.

THE EYE While restocking has never been an issue as Morgan feared, curating vintage pieces is not easy. Aside from sourcing, Morgan has actively self-educated and trained her eye to understand time period and why styles were invented when they were. Tags are also important. Someone as trained as Morgan can name the decade and or time period a piece originated based on tags, alone. Or even buttons and zippers.

Morgan just has it.

Training ones’ self, however, doesn’t make the final cut. Morgan just has it. The eye. For fashion, style, vintage, for what people will and will not wear.

Take it from me–I own about 10+ Treasure Trove Vintage pieces, ranging from heels to blazers to dresses to belts, and I have a seriously hard time leaving that store without picking something up, each time I go in, because pieces are that well priced + fit like a glove. All of Morgan’s pieces are incredibly wearable.

They translate timelessly to today with the allure of yesterday and the attitude of sugar.

THE EVENTS Park Ave Fest is this weekend!!! {I can’t believe it.} Treasure Trove will be around and even has a Sneak Peak this Friday, 8/1 for all of those who want to beat the crowds. Sales on summer + regular merchandise will be priced.

It was actually this time last year at Park Ave Fest when I first met Morgan + bought a beautiful brown blouse that buttons-up the back. I wanted to buy everything. {Slowly working on that.}

I work for Capra Strategy, owned by the incredibly intelligent + innovative + insightful + hilarious Cass McCrory. In fact, Capra actually administrates my website. That’s how we met.

OUR TEAM

The coolest thing about working for Cass + contributing to Capra is … well, there are too many to name. (Because there are a lot.) But one of the coolest–definitely the most invaluable–is having Cass as a mentor + guide. Strategy and decision making, creativity and leadership radiate from Cass like light  through crystal. Multi-faceted and everywhere all at once. Still so visible and poised.

A VISION + A MISSION

(and not a Dashboard Confessional Album)

Not too long ago during a team meeting, Cass took the time to sit with me more like a client than an employee. (Of course, I’m both. But in this case, she’s paying me to give me her advice that technically I should be paying her for. You get it, right.) Cass advised me to create a Vision + a Mission for my #ShopLocal jam.

Why?

So that when describing what I do, I don’t use words like “jam.”

Actually. Because Visions + Missions, they make it official. And not just because it’s a badge where every awesome organization has one. No. Because they are practical. They communicate. They are guidelines. So that when organizing events or sponsoring others, you have a frame of reference with which to say – Yes and, or Yes but, or No because, or No but how about. You dig.

LOOKING FORWARD

I’ve been putting a lot of thought into this. It has to be tight. It must truly reflect all of the tiny embers that I try to gather and ignite and spread to all of you.

Thrifting will always have a special place in my heart. From suits to blouses to slacks and shoes to bags: I gave my mom the hardest time, while growing up, for never buying anything new. For never being like the other moms. But she was right. She scraped together just enough change to buy me McDonald’s fries {we have her to thank for this infatuation} and paid for my older brother’s and my grade school tuition. She, a newly graduated full-time engineering UR student, and full-time mom with a new baby boy in the crib, interviewed for jobs out of university. She taught me value. She taught me style. She taught me what it means to be proud of what I have, who I am,  and my community. She taught me to do what I do, whether it is popular or not. She taught me all of this. And she taught me it through thrift shopping.

My aunt, as well. Aunt Katy, my mama’s older sister, is an antique dealer and thrift shopping maverick. With just 1 scan of the perimeter, Aunt Katy knows exactly what’s treasure and exactly what’s … not. Aunt Katy’s taught me, not just the value of a dollar, but also, the value of a flea market, the value of a garage sale, the value of an estate sale, the value of a church sale, and the value of the people behind them. Shopping is fun. Fashion feels good. But thrift shopping, the values and the culture and the people behind thrift shopping, is immortal.

When we thrift shop, yes: we give immortal lives to the things no one wants. More, we give immortality to the spirit surrounding our communities. This is why I thrift shop.

I thrift at VOA because they support and empower our community.

VOA CHILDREN’S CENTER

Last Thursday I shopped with Marketing & Media Director, Megan, at the 214 Lake Ave. location, centrally located between Lake Ontario and Downtown. Passersby cannot miss the neatly blocked tan building with familiar red, white, and blue sign that flags down shoppers, outside of this Upstate New York VOA Flagship store. Convenient parking flanks both sides of the Retail Center.

When I finished devouring aisle after aisle of shorts, denim, blouses, tanks, dresses {I even ran into a few of my own that I donated!}, Megan was kind enough to take me next door to the VOA Children’s Center.

My jaw never closed.  A bright jungle gym set-up donated by Top’s. The Universal Preschool that is associated with RCSD. Beautiful, jubilant children, pre-school aged and up, who attentively listened to aids and harmoniously played together, both inside and out. Brightly painted, mural-ed walls. Classrooms fully equipped with sitting spaces, learning areas, bathrooms, books. A full dental center in partnership with RGH. Even more medical services, including Telemed equipment to web conference with doctors as needed.

My eyes squeezed in tears. Seeing these happy, healthy children and the facilities imparted to teachers and aides to keep these children happy + healthy. These are the programs that improve our world. Programs like these, with the research and altruism and partnership and innovation and heart, are what change our world.

I am so proud that the VOA Children’s Center serves 280 children, between 6 weeks old to 12 years old, 98% of whom live in the most impoverished parts of Rochester. I am so proud we have VOA to serve a number of populations and communities in this exact same manner.
