TRADITIONS

#shoplocalroc

{ Ever heard that Girl Scouts song, “Make new friends, but keep the old,”?? That’s exactly what the holidays do. Mix the comfort of “old” with the excitement of “new.” And with that, we create new holiday traditions. That’s right–we create new celebrations that keep us jolly & joyful year after year. The arts, reads, bakes, & beauties below are incredible gift ideas. But more than that, they’re new traditions that keep our old ones alight. }

heart-to-heart

The past few weeks I’ve had the overwhelming joy of discovering.

The past few weeks I’ve discovered that Rochester, NY is about re-imagining + enhancing the old with the new. In fact …

this is how Rochester has survived

{ It’s true! We’re a tough city. Look at how profoundly the small businesses + merchants keep our life-blood flowing + rich. … This is why: #ShopLocal. }

Sophistication + Comfort. Twinkle lights. Boughs of pine. Chitter-chatter. Cascading lights. Vintage walls, fixtures, + vignettes. Stepping into Gallery Salon Wednesday after work transported me into a world I truly never have known. The bustling business of an exposed brick building, beautified by decadent glass and metal fixtures that mingled with every era, seductively juxtaposed the calm + comfort bestowed by Gallery’s innate grace. { … Guys, I haven’t even gotten to the wall of old mirrors! } There is simply no way to describe Gallery Salon, owned by art collector + expert stylist Erika Schramm. TWITTER | FACEBOOK | BLOG

A Curated Vintage Shop.

WHO:  Morgan DeLapa.

WHAT:  Vintage Clothing Boutique.

WHERE: Park + Meigs. (Same building as World Hair, Peppermint, + Scratch Bake Shop.)

WHEN: Vintage by soul. Acquiring since 2009. Blog since 2010. Park Ave shop since 2013.

WHY: Inspired by the “old-fashioned” style of grandmother and mother {Honey DeLapa, Morgan’s mom, is totally a PIC Partner In Crime} where, “You get dressed up, and you look nice to go out.”

HOW: Style. Eye. General Dopeness. Self-Educated.

Back when I converted from Barbara Ellen Writes to Barbara Ellen Shops Local, I lost some content because … I did it wrong. {That’s what happens when you go rouge on Capra Strategy. Don’t do it. But know that if you did, they will fix everything you don’t totally bomb.} That means the 1st feature I posted on Treasure Trove Vintage is history.

treasuretrove_095-1

Dress – 1950’s rare Peter Pan collar drop-waist dress.
Bag – 1960’s vinyl bag.

Huge bummer.

What happens when we trash beautiful pieces we’re meant to keep??

Morgan finds them!

Or you get some more. And that is where Treasure Trove Vintage + Anjolee DeMaroux Photography come in. I interviewed my insanely rad friends: curator and owner Morgan DeLapa on her vintage boutique + Renaissance woman photographer Anjolee DeMaroux, who also did my hair + make-up + helped me giggle as I sauntered the streets of Park Ave.

These women are what’s up.

* * *

“Do I really want to do this or is it just a fun side project to distract me from being an adult?”

STYLE Knowing Treasure Trove Vintage and owner Morgan DeLapa only make sense if you know and understand Morgan’s insanely unique and polished, eclectic and put-together style. She makes Brooklynites + Upper East Siders jealous, and baby doesn’t even live in NYC. {Even though it is her favorite city.} To keep track I follow her blog: The Treasure Trove.

I honestly cannot even handle Morgan’s natural cool. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

BEGINNINGS It’s almost impossible to believe it when you see the collection at Treasure Trove and when you imagine all of the pieces Morgan, herself, owns. But Morgan DeLapa began acquiring vintage pieces just 5 years ago, in 2009. On the first vintage dress c. 1970’s she bought back in high school, Morgan explains: “It’s ridiculously ugly but beautiful at the same time.” Therein lies the crux of the infatuation with vintage. Sometimes it’s beautiful, and sometimes it’s a beautiful disaster. Thing is, with pieces from Treasure Trove Vintage, you’re going to stun.

treasuretrove_010-2

Dress – 1960’s silk chiffon dress. Sold. But there are many more options available. Perfect for weddings + prom.
Necklace – 1950’s lilac beads.

“I wanted to give them a new home that wasn’t the dumpster. I thought they were so great, that they had to be shared with the world.”

In 2010 Morgan started her blog. When she began buying vintage pieces that were not just her size, she started selling on eBay in 2011. Shortly after, Morgan opened her first shop in Honeoye Falls in the photography studio her mother owned.

“It was my dream to have a store on Park Ave.”

When a listing opened up on Park Avenue in 2013, Morgan was reluctant to check-out the then Peppermint space. “I was looking more in the South Wedge because of price,” and, on the size of the shop, Morgan was, “worried she wouldn’t have enough to restock.”

But some things are just meant to be.

green dress revised

1960’s paisley dress. Modern wedges – purchased by me.

The building owner wanted another clothing shop to rent. Morgan named her price. She got it. The lease was signed in April 2013. Treasure Trove Vintage opened May 4, 2013.

“If I don’t do this now, someone else will.”

THE STORE When you walk into Treasure Trove Vintage, located in a building whose address is Park Ave with storefront facing Meigs–{think original location of Shop Peppermint}–you walk into a wonderland. It’s like being 5 and stepping into you grandmother’s, your aunt’s, and your mom’s closets–when all of those people are some of the coolest people you know–looking up, and being mesmerized. You want to wear the red glossy heels even if they are a few sizes to big because they just make you feel amazing.

Morgan describes her boutiques as a “curated vintage shop.” This means that she chooses only select pieces, between the 1900’s to the 1990’s (no later than 1994). It also means that, when she started, she was worried she wouldn’t have enough pieces to keep in-stock.

THE EYE While restocking has never been an issue as Morgan feared, curating vintage pieces is not easy. Aside from sourcing, Morgan has actively self-educated and trained her eye to understand time period and why styles were invented when they were. Tags are also important. Someone as trained as Morgan can name the decade and or time period a piece originated based on tags, alone. Or even buttons and zippers.

Morgan just has it.

Training ones’ self, however, doesn’t make the final cut. Morgan just has it. The eye. For fashion, style, vintage, for what people will and will not wear.

treasuretrove_024-1

Coat – 1960’s trapeze coat.
Dress – 1950’s/’60’s camel dress. I bought it.

Take it from me–I own about 10+ Treasure Trove Vintage pieces, ranging from heels to blazers to dresses to belts, and I have a seriously hard time leaving that store without picking something up, each time I go in, because pieces are that well priced + fit like a glove. All of Morgan’s pieces are incredibly wearable.

treasuretrove_031-2

Dress – See above.
Necklace – 1940’s/’50’s trifari metal necklace.
Heels – 1980’s Saks on Fifth Ave.

They translate timelessly to today with the allure of yesterday and the attitude of sugar.

THE EVENTS Park Ave Fest is this weekend!!! {I can’t believe it.} Treasure Trove will be around and even has a Sneak Peak this Friday, 8/1 for all of those who want to beat the crowds. Sales on summer + regular merchandise will be priced.

It was actually this time last year at Park Ave Fest when I first met Morgan + bought a beautiful brown blouse that buttons-up the back. I wanted to buy everything. {Slowly working on that.}

ART IS ACTIVISM. Dr. Ian Wilson, who began WALL\THERAPY and Synthesis Collaborative with its IMPACT initiative knows this. He also creates spaces to advocate through it. {Great read from (585) Mag here!} As explained by About WALL\THERAPY, Dr. Ian Wilson sought to give back what our city gave him:

In 2012, the manifestation of that thank you became WALL\THERAPY, a community level intervention using mural art as a vehicle to address our collective need for inspiration.

Remember 1975 Gallery? These murals were painted by therapists. AKA a combination of world-renown artists, graffiti artists, graphic designers, and typographers who are “[rehabilitating]” our city through their art. How many? A lot. Men. Women. Local. National. International. Incredibly talented. Beautifully therapeutic. Check out the 2012 \ 2013 artist rosters here!

Week Wrap Up: Social Media ROCs Shop Local.

(Above: Community Wall at Abundance Cooperative Market. Know your #Roc.)

Everything short of Tumblr enhanced my social calendar this week. Birthday Parties. Art Shows. Photo Shoots. Restaurants. Networking. Now, more than ever, Social Media clues me in to the Rochester I wouldn’t otherwise discover. Best tip? Visit your local hubs for community action like Abundance Coopertive Market downtown on Marshall Street! Or … Find a friend like Katie Regan who has her thumb on the pulse of Rochester. (This chick literally knows what’s up before it does, I swear.) Or … Follow. Follow follow follow. Follow businesses. Follow boutiques. Follow restaurants. Follow artists. Follow musicians. Follow your favorites. Follow those you’re curious about. Follow. I promise you: you will find fun activities you wouldn’t otherwise know. And then, you can have as rad a week + a weekend as I. (…You don’t even want to know how rad Katie’s was, btw. Woman needs a How To #Roc blog… .)

I also had the pleasure of sitting down with Marketing Director, Chris Whitebell, of Abundance Coopertive Market on Marshall Street. Spotlight Feature coming soon. Just know now that all items Abundance sells are either: Local, Organic, IPM, and/or Fair Trade. This means that every single thing you buy from Abundance is a socially conscious purchase.

ART SHOW | PHOTO SHOOTS | BIRTHDAY PARTIES | LOCAL FOOD

INSTAGRAM | TWITTER | FACEBOK

I was straight baller status this weekend. Why? Rochester is Rad at Social Media.

FRIDAY

ART SHOW – SHAWNEE HILL AT LUX LOUNGE

Follow local artist Shawnee Hill–among others–on either Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, preferably all 3, and you have an instant pass to all of their features. This week it was a free art opening at Lux Lounge with free food. Lux vibes, always. With a huge backyard, outdoor games, a fire pit, church chairs near the pool table, serious drink specials, nightly events, local art, and free bon bon lollies all of the damn time, you never beat Lux Lounge. You’re a fan after midnight? Try Lux during Happy Hour. Just as chill. And you extend the night. Now combine Lux with an art event. That’s a Friday night. And I met Shawnee Hill! This woman’s art is ethereal; meeting her, other-worldly. Thank you, Social Media. And Lux Lounge.

SATURDAY

PHOTO SHOOTS – ROCHESTER BRAINERY WITH LINDSAY STEPHANY PHOTOGRAPHY + TREASURE TROVE VINTAGE WITH DEMAROUX PHOTOGRAPHY

That’s right. Photo shoots. Plural. Aside from senior portraits in high school, I’ve only done 1 photo shoot–(also with the geniusly talented Anjolee [nee Wolfe] Eggleston of DeMaroux Photography)–so it’s not like this a regular thing for me. It’s not. But, between blogging + Social Media, on Saturday I had 2, which is–technical term–the flossy flossy. One, with Treasure Trove Vintage. The other, Rochester Brainery. I contacted Morgan of TTV. (Note: Original post w TTV accidentally got deleted. Which sucks.) I cannot wait to Spotlight Treasure Trove Vintage for you! Brainery contacted me via Twitter after I tweeted about their Brainery Bazaar. See? Social Media enhancing lives. The shoot? Baller. Not only is Lindsay Lau of Lindsay Stephany Photography a doll + her shared-loft studio at The Hungerford gorgeous, but also we had a riot. I brought friends. We played with props. There was laughter. Danielle and Stephanie from The Brainery were hilarious + helpful + gracious + fun. And, who knows, we could be plastered all over the website.  (No big deal.)

My time spent with Morgan, owner of Treasure Trove Vintage, her mother, Honey, and photographer, Anj of DeMaroux Photography, was also rich. I wore vintage dresses. That fit. Beautifully. Anj had me traipsing around the Park Ave and East End streets like it ain’t no thang. I cannot wait to share this with you!

BIRTHDAY PARTIES – SHOP PEPPERMINT IS 2!

Both photo shoots happened Saturday: Brainery in the morning and Treasure Trove in the evening. What better way to split some down time than by stopping by Shop Peppermint’s Birthday?! (It helps that Peppermint and Treasure Trove Vintage share a building on the corner of Park + Meigs.) With cute + classy h’orderves by Scratch Bakeshop and endless collections of hip + affordable jewelry, shoes, dresses, blouses, shorts, and even bathing suits … I didn’t want to pull myself away. I truly cannot believe Shop Peppermint turned 2. What on earth did I do–where did I shop–before Shop Peppermint happened to Rochester?

LOCAL FOOD – THE RED FERN + LA CASA

Lunch at The Red Fern. I got the PB+J smoothie. … Again. I want to order all of their smoothies all at one time and drink all of them one after the other without guilt. I couldmake that happen. It would be grand.

Dinner at La Casa. After at least 1 hour of prep (Anj could also be a make-up artist, PS) and 3 hours of shooting, we were famished. Both The Owl House and Cure had wait times. (Duh.) Anj brainstormed La Casa! About 1 year old, on Alexander near Boulder, I’d just driven by it earlier and reminded myself I’ve been meaning to try. IT ROCKED. I felt transported to vacation and right at home, all at the same time. Their patio space also looks rocking. La Casa will be a mainstay, especially this summer. Between the refreshing $5 house margarita, the authentic and hearty appetizers (we ordered 3…), the gracious service, that patio, South Wedge as the hood, and the vibrant energy with chill vibes: I must.

FOLLOW ROCHESTER

Thing is? I didn’t even hit on everything this weekend. I missed the Brainery Bazaar, attended by The Knotty Owl! (Best laid plans.) Also, on Sunday I missed A-List’s Blogger Brunch at Hogan’s Hideaway, another local favorite. Super bummed. But, glad to know I can vindicate. By following Rochester on Social Media.

We all know that Rochester, NY is Festival City USA. What we need to know is that we can celebrate Rochester before the end of May. Rochester is Rad. Now follow it so you can always find it.

Oh. And make sure to follow me!
