#ROC THE HOLIDAY

{ This holiday, a curly-haired elf named BESL gift-wraps your season with a whole lotta #shoplocalroc love. We’re dressing-up our normal categories — Lifestyle, Tips + Tricks, Week Wrap-Up — so you can #Roc The Holiday right. From now until 12/24, sprinkle the season with — Myths, Gifts, + Favs — and out-sparkle those snow crystals … just to show them who is boss. }

look good, feel good

MYTHS – Not your typical shopping. Why don’t we #ShopLocal more?? We already know that it’s:

  • affordable
  • unique
  • convenient
  • sustainable
  • fun

Because it’s not a part of our daily habits! Tiny myths we’ve learned along the way have become huge barriers that keep #ShopLocal from our daily routines. This season, BESL dispels these 5 mighty myths:

  1. no parking!
  2. too expensive!
  3. not a 1-stop-shop!
  4. out of the way!
  5. weird hours!

this weekend: rmsc holiday bazaar rwms ultimate women’s expo

{ I’ll be at rwms with ouzon soda sat! }

GIFTS – Not your typical gifting. Gift giving–great gift giving–shouldn’t have to be a mystery. The secret?

  • what
  • where

Knowing what makes a gift great + knowing where to find that gift are 2 very different things. They often contradict! { Many of the greatest gifts, are the rarest. } All season long, #shoplocalroc guides you to more satisfying gifts.

better than a star in the sky + 10 reindeer

Just look at all these resources!

{ Take the Pledge! }
Shop Local Rochester

FAVS – Not your typical favs. Hidden gems. When shopping, we seek-out hidden gems more than a healthy cookie recipe we’re not ashamed to swap. { Or keep secret. } #ShopLocal is chocked-full of hidden gems! The best part? They’re:

  • directly in our neighborhoods and backyards
  • at familiar spots
  • even in our homes!

This season, here are BESL’s top picks:

  1. Festivals + Bazaars – 3 Weekends of Handcrafted, Fair Trade, Locally Owned Businesses
  2. Thrift – Let the Preparations Begin!
  3. Arts + Reads – Stay Classy
  4. Food + Drink – Hoppy Holidays: Get Cultured
  5. Secret Spots – Stealthy + Strategic

Shopping is inevitable this holiday season.
Make it fun + make it count with Shop Local Rochester.

Shop Local. Holiday Wrap-Up In The #Roc .

Sara Silvio Earrings from Trunk Show at Peppermint.
Momsly loves them & they are one-of-a-kind gorgeous!!

Where did I shop this holiday season?? I shopped #Roc . I shopped local, & I shopped the specialty shops, boutiques, & bizarres of Rochester, NY. I found gifts for my brothers, pets, roommate, Aunt, Momsly, & even Da’ Moe. I found gifts that are unique, affordable, memorable, and that support our local Rochester community & economy. I bought 0 gifts from the mall, though–I admit–I did buy Orly nail polish c/o Marshall’s, an Amazon gift card for my Kindle-loving big bro, & American Eagle jeans for my stylish (though he’d never admit it) younger bro. But mall? Nope. Not even at all. Want to know how much I spent?? See below. …

Diverse-Array-of-Gifts Tips:
*Archimage: Diverse selection of clothing, jewelry, & home goods. I am in love.
*ParkleighBest of Rochester Gift Shop 2012. From high-end lines, such as the eclectic McKenzie Childs, luxurious Crabtree & Evelyn, and iconic Vera Bradley, to affordable gift cards, home goods, & trinkets: a holiday favorite and year-round mecca for so many of your shopping needs.

Top-Quality-Gifts Tricks:

*Craft Co No 6 2nds: Craft Co. also spans the price range gamut. Best kept secret? Artisans handmade “2nds,” with “imperfections” on pottery pieces like vases and bowls almost invisible to the eye. Frequently marked over 50% off.
*Local Artisans: Go to your local markets like First Friday. Shop at boutiques when they feature artists who have trunk shows. Check out bizarres like Last Minute Market by reading their blogs & following their vendors on Facebook. When you find emerging artists who handcraft items like jewelry or comic books or beads, you find high-quality gifts, brimming with character, at more affordable prices than you’d ever find retail.

How To. Wrap a Gift: Last Minute. Hipster. Environmentally Friendly. Festively.

You can thank my Momsly for this. Woman knows how to save a bag. And its packaging. Ribbons? Yup. That really thick nice wrapping paper she made you remove from the present ever so delicately as to preserve it for the does-not-yet-exist-present? Uh huh. She taught me all of this. And now I’m going to share it with you.

Truly, a very Merry Christmas.
Ambience.
(Fired made by Momsly.)

I store my bags smack-dab against the wall in my bedroom. Snug between 2 dilapidated cubbies, which made it through college, and my pop-together bookshelf that I’ve had since jr high (noting a theme?): I save anything–anything–I know I can use with a gift. Here are some of the most useful bobs & ends to keep around:

Left: Huge bags o bags, boxes, ribbons,
tissue papers, wrapping paper, & things. Top: The Red Series.
Bottom: The Metallic-as.

1. Vibrant Tissue Paper:  Always a must-keep. It’s super easy to store & incredibly versatile for all occasions. I’ve found that shades of red & pink (think Holiday Season, Valentine’s Day, 4th Of July) & metallics (trendy neutrals) have the biggest re-use factor.

2. Ribbons & Baggies: All things tiny & sweet. I literally saved the twine-like ties off of (the most delicious) Trader Joe’s cookies, because I knew their their homemade feel would make them a sweet addition a top any gift, be in for Christmas or just because.
#SHOPLOCAL .
Some giftwrap items I do buy.
Such as the candy-striped paper you see here & the
twine from Archimage that you see above. A necessity!
Also, if ever you’re shopping & you buy a pair of earrings for yourself, I’m not telling you to ask the sale’s person for a gift bag. But I am saying that if the sale’s person asks you if they are a gift, then you should probably bite-your-tongue & nod-your-head. You might end up with some adorable purple or pink baggies for items ranging from earrings to sample size make-up.
3. Boxes: Perhaps the most coveted all of re-giftwrap items. The perfect-fit box lends itself squarely for the perfectly wrapped gift. Not featured here, I have saved all of the Birchbox boxes in which my speciality make-up, toiletry, & luxury good items have shipped. In fact, if you’re a Birchbox-er yourself, or just need a project for the various BB-like boxes that you have laying around, please check the website and blog. You can find cool crafts, like making a neat make-up organizer. (I know.)
All gifts (- 2) are from Local Rochester Vendors!
See follow-up Post for Details. For now:

Other great boxes to opt for? Anything pretty & designed. In the top-right corner of the 2nd photo, you can see a floral patterned box. My Aunt Katy this to me with 2 very delicious & very pretty smelling pink candles. A floral, romantic looking box?? That could be Valentine’s Day, Birthday, Anniversary, Thank You, Congratulations, Christmas. Clearly, I had to keep it. Who can throw away that gem anyhow?
Final Tips
When wrapping for dudes, keep it simple. And always keep a Sharpie (or 10) around. They do some miracles with the lettering.
Merry Christmas

Eve.

Great Jar!
1.    Marshall’s. Let’s just get this out of the way, now. Unique, you ask? Yes. Even      though probably everybody is gifting from Marshall’s (or TJ Maxx, etc), you will still find super unique gifts. Disclaimer: Use only in lieu of items you can only buy commercially. Candles? No. Save those for the Salons & Spas (#3) or, better yet, Fair Trades (#4) or Boutiques! (#5). Large glass jar of Jelly Belly’s for Momsly? Done. It beats retail prices, & she’ll reuse that jar. Another idea is its variety of cute & sexy socks. From over-the-knee wool numbers to thigh-high lace-capades: very few of us buy ourselves nice socks. And that’s why, when luxurious, it presents as a unique gift. As far as beauty goes? I croon for Marshall’s supply of eye creams & serums. Be it a beauty basket or a stocking stuffer, lotions & potions are sure to woo.

Moisturizing & Gentle.
2.     Trader Joes. If you’re a Rochesterian, & you haven’t been: go. Whether you’re on a budget or you eat only organic, or both, you will relish in the unique finds & low prices offered by this specialty grocer. For the beer lover, try a European Trader Joe brew or one of its more local offerings, such as a Ithaca Pale Ale or Butternut Brewery creation. A baker? No bounds exist with the boxes of easily prepared confectionaries, such as Chocolate Peppermint Roll, or the wholesome, organic ingredients for the made-from-scratch-mmm-doer. Also, Trader Joe’s also offers bath & beauty varietals. French hand-mill soap, organic oatmeal exfoliates, Vitamin E Oil. (Way less expensive here, than at drug stores.) And, yes, the packaging is pretty. Whether hosting your first (or 500th) holiday shindig or buying-on-the-go, Trader Joe’s is a great stop for your groceries & your gifts.

Amazing value for gorgeous make-up.
3.     Salons & Spas. Last year, I found that I bought most of my gifts, from friends to my mom to even my dad, at Sephora. Amazing what bath goods packaged in a masculine box or feminine bag can do. This year, while going for a hair trim in November, I had the same reaction to Rochester’s most renowned salon, Scott Miller. With OPI polishes regularly on-sale for 50% off to sample make-up sets like this  -> from Smashbox, it’s hard not to find something for your lovies & for yourself. Similar to the luxe-socks (mentioned above),  salons & spas often sell the luxury version of everyday items at, of course, a luxury price. Really, who buys a $25 candle for him or herself? No one. And that is exactly the point. No one does, and yet $25 is still affordable. For that candle-burning, under-pampered love in your life, spring for an environmentally friendly, fragrantly soothing $25 candle. I think you’ll both be pleasantly surprised.

Handmade Stationary.
4.     Fair Trade. Ideally, everyone would shop fair trade for all of their holiday gifts. With local and mail-order vendors like One World Goods (potentially 10,000 Villages in your area), Noonday Collection, and Heifer International, the idea of every gift, every voice is possible. The former 2 offer hand crafted gifts the likes of jewelry & home goods. The latter, animals and live stock as food and farm for families. All 3, an investment in the livelihood of international artisans. In the past few years, Momsly and I have developed a tradition of me buying her livestock through Heifer. Two years ago, bunnies. Last year, chickens.

5.   Boutiques, Restaurants, Shops. #ShopLocal #ShopLocal #ShopLocal . I guarantee you that anything you buy at the mall—children’s toys, lotions & potions, blouses & bags, gourmet food items, trinkets & knick-knacks, hats, mittens, & socks, anything—you can buy in and around your local communities. Sure, the mall, or even Target, is considered a one-stop-shop. But you still have to traipse. Navigate the unending isles. Fish for a spot. Get shoulder-shoulder with the crowds. So how is this any different than walking a few short blocks to navigate the neighborhood goods? The difference is supporting your local economy. The difference is finding truly unique gifts. Gifts that have a story and are frequently made locally and/or within the United States.
