Penny + Rocky.

♥ CAUSES

  1. Dogs + @vsas_ras – This society, the shelter, it’s volunteers, + the animals who they serve are a saint. Our pitty-pup Ms. MoneyPenny is a Verona Street dog! She’s a rescue who was a stray found wandering the turf of the Public Market in the freezing cold as just an itty bitty with a huge gash of a scare on her back. (Our other dog, Rocky, is from Lollypop.) My dad works across the street from Verona Street so it made sense we adopted from here.
  2. Fashion + @shoppeppermint – Affordable + Boutique. Trendy + Classic. International + Local. What more is there to say about Peppermint on the corner of Park + Meigs?? … Well actually, a lot. {See Below.}
  3. Shopping + #shoplocal Barbara Ellen Shops Local. ‘Nough said.

$10 full dollars is bank!
Unless you plan on spending over $50, it beats 20% off any day

<$20 when you bring in doggy treats! {Burr. It’s getting cold.}

HERE’S HOW IT REALLY WORKS

Interested in something for you, gifts for another, or getting an early start on the holiday shopping?? Peppermint is your spot.

IMG_9370

$12 … when you bring in doggy treats.

  1. Unique. Quality. No one is going to have the jewelry, accessories, scarves, shoes, + clothing that Peppermint offers. Partially because much of the clothing Tanvi sells comes from her own Peppermint line that she designs! And almost all of the jewelry is locally made or handcrafted locally in other regions of the world.
  2. 1 For Me. 2 For You. Peppermint has everything you want, + an innumerable selection of jewelry, clothing styles, + accessories for your: best friend, mom, girlfriend, aunt, sister, grandmother. They even have letter press cards! And if I’m being really honest … it typically goes – 1 for you. 2 for me.
  3. Affordable. Selection. It’s absurd. Bracelets typically range form $12-16. Necklaces, $14-24. Rochester jewelry at $24. Blouses around $22+. I even found a cardigan wrap for $24!! What’s this mean for you???
IMG_9383

$12 with doggy treats!! {It’s true.}

you do the math

With prices this low + a deal this fabulous, your purchase can be as low as:

  • $2 for bracelets + earrings
  • $12 or $14 for beautiful blouses
  • $14 for rocking #ROC jewelry
  • $26 for solid boots
IMG_9389

$26 with doggy treats. {Must see new shoe room!}

HERE’S THE PLAN

  1. Buy some dog treats.
  2. Head to Peppermint before close on Sunday 11/9.
  3. Donate something good to the people + animals at VSAS.
  4. And get your shop on!
IMG_9382

$14 with doggy treats! {I bought it!}

ABUNDANCE COOPERATIVE MARKET | PEPPERMINT | MACHINATOR CHAOS

TREASURE TROVE VINTAGE

IMG_8826

Today’s #ootd: 1980’s bouclé sweater – Treasure Trove Vintage. Handcrafted necklace – Machinator Chaos.

There are 3 undeniable best-case scenarios when shopping

  1. Sale
  2. Everything Fits
  3. Shopping Finds You

Over the past 2 weeks, all three happened to me. And that’s exactly where I’ll start – #3. That’s what this post is dedicated to: The (Skeleton) Key to Shopping. Keying yourself in to the very spots + circumstances that make shopping feel:

  • fit
  • fun
  • and flawless

your skeleton key awaits

NATURAL FOODS MARKET – It’s not just the food.

I love shopping Abundance Cooperative Market. It’s on Marshall St, near downtown, just off Monroe, and it’s: Quiet. Uncrowded. Local/Organic/IPM/Non-GMO/Fair Trade. Delicious. … Plus, they have a beauty isle. I strongly encourage all of you to buy:

and

  • Make-up! Abundance is where I bought this Mineral Fusion lip balm. Only $9.99 {well-priced compared to its competitors} + friendlier to the face.

{ Bonus: It’s the perfect dewey-pink to give me that – Oh, I just woke up like this – look. }

TRUNK SHOWS – They’re not just for connoisseurs.

Stepping inside Peppermint is like going to the cool kids’ party. You belong. Peppermint on Park + Meigs rivals any boutique I’ve ever been in (which includes: Davos, Switzerland; Rome, Italy; Paris, France; and those along Las Ramblas in Barcelona, Spain.) Owner Tanvi Asher:

More?? … Decor rivals the racks. Tanvi is an:

  • entrepreneur, designer, and seamstress {think Asher Bridal}
  • who creates artistically renowned window displays and interior store decor.

{ She a lady boss. }

She also hosts Trunk Shows for artists like Machinator Chaos. Meet your favorite artist face-to-face + sip on wine or champagne and snack on treats. Aside from having the opportunity to buy this incredibly well-priced handcrafted industrial necklace from Machinator Chaos and meet its maker (who is another young Barb!), I love Trunk Shows. They are:

  • Affordable – quality, one-of-a-kind, well made, handcrafted art.
  • Unpretentious – who says class has to be an ass?? Not me. A Peppermint Trunk Show: vibe is always right.
  • Awesome – self-explanatory.
IMG_8827

Look at that craftsmanship! Handmade by Barb of Machinator Chaos. Purchased at Peppermint Trunk Show.

VINTAGE SHOP – You don’t have to be rich, a fashionista, … or a grandma.

Do yourself a favor and find your favorite vintage–or thrift–shop in town. If you’re from Rochester, NY, look no further: Treasure Trove Vintage. Convenient – it’s in the same building as Peppermint on Park + Meigs!

{ Pssst – Everything is well-priced. Sweaters range from $15 – $20 pops a piece. Coats are a steal! Get your winter-on, now. }

At this point, a good 75% of my working wardrobe hails from TTV. Day dresses, party dresses; sweaters, skirts; casual wear, work wear; shoes, bags. I could go on. Why do I find Treasure Trove irresistible?

  • On Trend – Morgan, owner, has that eye. Every single time I’m in that shop, I find exactly what I’m swooning over. At Treasure Trove Vintage, it exists.
  • Quality – Morgan is a pro. All pieces are in premium shape. Combine that with the tendency for older clothing to be made better, anyway, and … you will own this piece for another 20 years.
  • Fit – It fits. All of it. I’m not talking miracles. (An XS still does not fit me.) I mean decades. Be it ’50’s waists, ’60’s hemlines, ’70’s styles, or ’80’s cuts … clothing from Treasure Trove Vintage fits, really well.
IMG_8821

The iron broke… 1990’s pencil skirt – Treasure Trove Vintage. Picture doesn’t do it justice.

I’ll be honest

I didn’t mean to shop the past 2 weeks. Shopping found me. Quality, Unique, Affordable, Handcrafted, Good for Me + Good for my Community shopping.

{ Psst. – For all my #ShopLocal finds … Follow me @babsiell on Instagram. }

I love when that happens. … Now go find your Skeleton Key.

Shop Local. GoBuyRochester.

What if there were a website–a 1 stop shop–where you could browse & purchase all of your hometown Rochester favs with just 1 shopping cart? …Look no further. We have 1. From all 11 of your surrounding Rochester counties. This hidden gem is so exciting, it makes me want to GoBuyRochester.

GoBuyRochester, an equaTEK initiative, is a consortium of businesses from 11 surrounding counties including Monroe County. Part of the allure is ordering your favorite far-aways with all of the convenience and none of the fuss. Growing up, nothing felt warmer and more secure than the smell of Monk’s Bread Raisin with Cinnamon toast, crisping away in the oven. When shoppers, near & afar, crave these same Rochester tastes, GBR brings them to our fingertips. GBR even allows for Mix-and-Max Monk’s Bread packages which send deliciously as gifts. Simply order online at GoBuyRochester, and they ship & deliver right to your doorstep or the doorstep of your lucky recipient. What a lovely convenience to treat any homesick blues.
The convenient website is also incredibly friendly to navigate. It’s no wonder GBR is a 2013 Best of the Web Awards Finalist. Take the Shop Counties tab. Through a simple series of interactive clicks, GBR allows users the ease of viewing participating companies as well as learning more about our surrounding counties. GBR introduces us to our Local products as well as our neighboring communities. For a full list of Rochester Business Journal finalists in 2013 Best of the Web Awards held March 14, 2013, visit their page.
Not only is GBR committed to quality convenience, but their business model, to improving the quality of our local economy. Under the About Tab, you’ll notice that every dollar spent with a locally-owned merchant has three times the impact of a dollar spent at a big box store. The link on GBR‘s site (copied/pasted above) reveals a flow-chart titled The Local Multiplier Effect. This shows the impact of keeping money closer to where you spend it. In short, about 3 times as much money stays local when you spend it local.
GoBuyRochester is not just a website. It is a community working to strengthen the backbone of small business and its relationship with our local communities. As GoBuyRochester continues to thrive, we, Rochester, NY, will thrive. I encourage all consumers to Shop Local. Shop GBR. I encourage all small business owners to Be GBR.
Do you??

Shop Local. Holiday Wrap-Up In The #Roc .

Sara Silvio Earrings from Trunk Show at Peppermint.
Momsly loves them & they are one-of-a-kind gorgeous!!

Where did I shop this holiday season?? I shopped #Roc . I shopped local, & I shopped the specialty shops, boutiques, & bizarres of Rochester, NY. I found gifts for my brothers, pets, roommate, Aunt, Momsly, & even Da’ Moe. I found gifts that are unique, affordable, memorable, and that support our local Rochester community & economy. I bought 0 gifts from the mall, though–I admit–I did buy Orly nail polish c/o Marshall’s, an Amazon gift card for my Kindle-loving big bro, & American Eagle jeans for my stylish (though he’d never admit it) younger bro. But mall? Nope. Not even at all. Want to know how much I spent?? See below. …

Tips & Tricks
It’s hard to say best deals & even harder to call favorites,
but if you’re at all worried about finding a diverse array of quality gifts
at absolutely affordable prices, check out these
Tips & Tricks.

Full View of Handcrafted “2nds” Vase.
(Cost the same as a pair of wool socks at Archimage!)
Diverse-Array-of-Gifts Tips:
*Archimage: Diverse selection of clothing, jewelry, & home goods. I am in love.
*ParkleighBest of Rochester Gift Shop 2012. From high-end lines, such as the eclectic McKenzie Childs, luxurious Crabtree & Evelyn, and iconic Vera Bradley, to affordable gift cards, home goods, & trinkets: a holiday favorite and year-round mecca for so many of your shopping needs.

Top-Quality-Gifts Tricks:

*Craft Co No 6 2nds: Craft Co. also spans the price range gamut. Best kept secret? Artisans handmade “2nds,” with “imperfections” on pottery pieces like vases and bowls almost invisible to the eye. Frequently marked over 50% off.
*Local Artisans: Go to your local markets like First Friday. Shop at boutiques when they feature artists who have trunk shows. Check out bizarres like Last Minute Market by reading their blogs & following their vendors on Facebook. When you find emerging artists who handcraft items like jewelry or comic books or beads, you find high-quality gifts, brimming with character, at more affordable prices than you’d ever find retail.

Shop Local. Peppermint & Small Business Saturday #ROC .

Small Business Saturday.
Hair Bows. Peppermint.
Not to be confused with the amazing Bow Ties. (In the back.)
Small Biz Sat, the day after Black Friday & 2 days before Cyber Monday, is your chance to support the local, emerging, & growing economies in your neighborhood. Normally shop for veg at the grocery store? Try your local farmers’ market. Looking for unique holiday gifts? Hop to a hip boutique. Looking for a tasty bite to eat … other than some turkey?? Mom ‘n’ Pop restaurant is the way to go. To those of us still standing after the Grey and Black deluge of retail that flooded our stores as the tryptophan sank-in: Remember this one thing…

Doesn’t have to be Small Business Saturday
for an excuse to Shop Local.
Classic Cameo. Edgy Cameo.
Exactly what Peppermint’s all about. (I bought two!)
In fact, I shopped today, Black Friday 2012. Great thing about boutique shopping (aside from it is awesome) is that stores are not necessarily overrun. Or, while certainly busier, definitely not death-defying. So, let me tell you about one of the best & newest boutiques in Rochester.
Peppermint.

Envelope Purse. Holiday Wish List 2012.
Want that blue baby with the yellow! … But any will do.
I am absolutely obsessed & infatuated in all senses of the words. For one, Tanvi,  owner of Peppermint, partners with local artisans to bring you the most unique and beautiful in meaningful jewelry. For two, Tanvi, designer of fashion apparel, designs several of the dresses & apparel items herself. SHE DESIGNS THEM HERSELF. THEY ARE ONE-OF-A-KINDS. MADE IN NEW YORK CITY. ONLY 6 PER DESIGN TOTAL. That is domestic. That is diva. I love her designs.
Love at First Sight (online) with this Lace Peplum.
Look Closely or Look Above … Classic Cream Cameo.
Owner & designer Tanvi brings such freshness & class to all that she does, from Peppermint’s hip/quirky/vintage/classic style to the bright/clean/luminous space of her store, that it’s easy to continually shop for more. Not only did Tanvi remember that the last time I shopped, I was in-recovery from a migraine & so, this evening, asked if I felt better, but aslo, she offered advice for a dress on which I could not decide. I’ll be honest with you. I promise. Absolutely, I believed. And, I am so glad that I did.
Pics doesn’t do this justice.
Love that it’s Asian-inspired. Perfect w a Skeleton Cameo.
Finally, friends: parting gifts. Tanvi, every now & again, subtly sneaks a gift bag into your own. During Rochester’s Fashion Week it was a full-on grab bag filled with goodies. This evening, a complimentary strand of Birds of Paradise to brighten the holiday season. What’s more? She consistently interacts with patrons via social media (Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram).  Check out the pic of my ugly sweater on her Facebook homepage! If that’s not dedication to the community that she serves, then someone, please, find me a Webster.
Tanvi via Insty.
Complimentary & Beautiful Birds of Paradise.
So. For all of your holiday finds, indulgent dreams, & Small Business Saturday sprees, Shop Local & Shop Peppermint. (The website is good, but the store, incredible. So go!)
Something for everyone.
Bit of whimsy for we older souls.
