IMG_9805

IMG_9845

FON’S PICKSLike trying the chef’s favorite dish when you can’t decide, focusing on these items handpicked by owner + jewelry maker, Fon, is a home run.

  • Handmade – There’s something elusively everlasting about one-of-a-kind, handcrafted jewelry that cannot be found anywhere else. { Get on that. }
  • Seasonal – Snowflake earrings. They’re precious +, in upstate NY, they help us love the snow just a little bit more. { Every bit counts. }
  • Trend – Druzy! Fahsye carries real druzy + faux for all price-points and gift giving occasions. Druzy is both elegant + street smart – it compliments and completes any look. { It’s good. }

Drink Local: Ouzon All-Natural Soda.

{Photograph taken from www.greeksoda.com}

OUZON

OPA! ORIGINALS GREEK SODA

FACEBOOK ALL NATURAL | WEBSITE

“What about an ouzo flavored soda?”

~Phil Broikos, co-owner

WHO: Anastasia + Phil Broikos

WHAT: All natural Greek Soda. Makings in Dundee, NY. Non-alcoholic. Pairs nicely with alcohol. (Submit cocktail concoctions online!)

WHERE: Made in Dundee, NY (syrup)

WHY: Where ingenuity meets culture meets calculated risk meets why not

BUY: Grocery Stores. Restaurants. Check by Location Here. I found mine at Abundance Cooperative Market! Also at Wegmans (all of Monroe County).

SAY: OUZON (pronounced “OO-zone”).

EVENTS: Like on Facebook: OPA! Originals. Check for all Events.

Greek Fest – Going on Now!

Annunciation of the Greek Orthodox Church on East Ave: Thurs | Fri | Sat | Sun

Natural. Refreshing. Unique. Delicious. Anastasia Broikos, co-owner of OPA! Originals along with husband Phil, is everything Ouzon Soda oozes. Add to this: Effervescent. Inviting. Sweet. I met Anastasia at Abundance Cooperative Market during Earth Day Birthday. Tiny table near the entrance of bulk foods. Crowds clamored. Like me, I’m not sure they knew what for. I suppose exuberance. It flowed. From Anastasia, the petite woman originally from Queens, with a genuine smile + boisterous laugh. And from her clear, bubbly cups. At that juncture, it was Grand Central. Photographs. Pleads from Abundance for more. Old people. Young people. Laughter. I pressed the cup to my lips. Dainty bubbles fizzed. In that moment, I felt like family.

Family. Because Ouzon Soda is family. Engineered in 2009. Incorporated into OPA! Originals by 2010. Winner 1 year later in 2011 of the Beverage World Bronze BevStar Award for Best Carbonated Soft Drink. Managing a household with 2 beautiful girls, now 4 + 6.  Anastasia + Phil, Greek-Americans with complex ties to their heritage, truly run a family-owned company.

“I’m constantly pulling Barbie dolls out of my files,”

~Anastasia Broikos, co-owner

Both successful professionals (Anastasia in print media + Phil, a lawyer), put aside these careers + pursued a vision. As Phil explains, the Broikos’ decided to “give it a year.” With “calculated risk” as their strategy and “value judgement” as their guide, Anastasia + Phil navigated this epic endeavor. I’m tempted to say that Ouzon Soda was inspiration from the gods. But well, I think Phi’s father had more of a role.

“What is uniquely Greek?”

Go Greek. Phil is a Rochester native, + his dad worked as an engineer at Xerox. Happening upon a Greek inspired premium soda was a journey–a calculated one–before anything else. I’m no marketing major, but with 2 simples questions it’s evident that Phil carved out ingenuity by identifying a niche product with existing platform.“What is unique?” “What is the speciality [to each culture]?” Next, he + Anastasia invented. “What is uniquely Greek?” Oregano. Feta Cheese. Greek Wine. Greek Whiskey. Greek flavors. Greek ingredients. Greek products. Non-Greek still-popular products. Anastasia + Phil populated this matrix and, after ditching their diaper truck idea (someone sniffed it out 1st), they imbibed the ingenuity behind Rivella, a famed Swiss soft drink. Thank. God.

A Greek Ouzo Liqueur Inspired Soda.

Invention. Phil doesn’t actually love the taste of ouzo, an aperitif that is practically the national liqueur of Greece. The connection? Ouzon Soda tastes the way ouzo smells. (Genius.) More importantly? Both Anastasia + Phil love all-natural. The About page on their website www.greeksoda.com explains it best:

OUZON (pronounced “OO-zone”) soda is a premium all-natural sparkling beverage based on the flavor profile of ouzo, the unofficial national liqueur of Greece. The proprietary syrup for OUZON is meticulously handcrafted using pure cane sugar, and is infused with certified organic star anise to impart subtle notes of licorice.

By wishing upon a star is exactly how Ouzon Soda went from promise to pop. Ouzo liqueur smells refreshingly crisp, but the heavy taste doesn’t follow. Anastasia + Phil needed to capture a way to project this signature taste from anise, a Mediterranean herb responsible for the licorice undertones, and had to do it naturally.

All Natural. Made Local.

No Corn Syrup. Anastasia + Phil came up with the recipe for Ouzon Soda in their very own kitchen located in Penfield, NY. (Official headquarters of OPA! Originals. Unless you also count Starbucks.) They needed star anise, the Asian spice (not the Mediterranean herb), and they needed it to make a tea. When Phil reverse engineered this, the rest flowed. Cane sugar creates an all-natural syrup and: Opa!  …Too predictable? Well, Ouzon Soda is not.

  • certified organic star anise

  • star anise tea made in upstate NY (Dundee)

  • cane sugar … made from scratch

  • natural citric acid as a preservative

No corn syrup. No sodium benzoate (an artificial preservative). No chemicals. Just pure, homemade, all-natural, premium ingredients. As crystal clear as the Ouzon Soda they create.

OPA! Originals

Godliness. When Anastasia + Phil started OPA! Originals + invented Ouzon Soda, they did not just become entrepreneurs. Anastasia + Phil–married, with children, starting a business–became an entrepreneurial deity. What do we get?? Ouzon All-Natural Premium Soda. Whose taste + purity + authenticity embodies the very standards + traditions, culture + nuances the Broikos family generates. Godliness. Infused into every single last drop of Ouzon Soda.

Drink Local

With OPA! Originals located in Penfiled, NY, the makings of Ouzon Soda started in Dundee, NY, and with Ouzon sold all over Monroe County: Anastasia + Phil Broikos make Rochester, NY a city among the gods. Truly, we thank you so much.

Sustainability + Activism: Why Shop Local?

MAGIX

VINTAGE | DESIGNER | BOUTIQUE

SOUTH WEDGE

CLOSED JULY 2013

Magix is why we Shop Local. Magix, a unique clothing boutique that sold an affordable and eclectic array of designer, boutique, and vintage items, was located on South Avenue, directly across from Thread, in the heart of the South Wedge shopping district. I discovered Magix during my 2nd Southwedgeucation. Southwedgeucation–you know–City Newspaper’s  late summer evening that buzzes with shoppers, strollers, businesses, food trucks, bars, music shops, boutiques, and more to celebrate the South Wedge . A September evening that bustles with the volume and energy every single other weekday night, certainly weekend, should generate. I found Magix. I found glass beads straight from Ghana. I found vintage and thrifted items. And shamefully, even I–the Shop Local Campaigner–even I seldom returned. Magix, which closed this past July, might have closed for any number of reasons. But it’s safe to surmise it was due to a lack of awareness. A lack of Shop Local know-how. Every single person I revealed the magic to about Magix? None had been before. Not necessarily because we don’t know. Because it’s not familiar.

HABIT

Don’t let habit dictate your Shop Local. Habit. What is habit? Most habits are bad, no? Habit is the unthinking actions we ascribe tendencies and routines because we either have to (brushing teeth), we don’t think about it (tapping fingers), or we need to cope (smoking).

Why let shopping–why let life–be just another habit.

Make shopping and living a conscious action. Think about it. Shop Local is still convenient. It’s just that Shop Local is also conscious. Shop Local is affordable. Shop Local is unique. Shop Local is activism.

CONSUMERISM IS ACTIVISM

The Shop Local Campaign in Rochester, NY is sustainability. Shop Local is sustainable for entrepreneurs. Shop Local is sustainable for community development. Shop Local is sustainable for cultural identity. Shop Local is sustainable for individual budgets. Shop Local is sustainable because it preservers local talent and nurtures sustained growth. (See Go Buy Rochester’s explanation of the Multiplier Effect.)

Why not turn your consumerism into activism?

Shop Local in Rochester, NY for your every single day needs, every single day. This is why we Shop Local. So that good things–quality businesses with character, that enhance our cultural identity and work with our daily budgets–so that good things stay alive. So that they thrive. So that we thrive.

And don’t just #shoplocal…

BACKGROUND

Jonelle Maira (pronounced My-rah) grew up in Webster, NY. At 18, she left to attend the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in Manhattan where she lived, attended school, and worked for 8 years.

Wearing her handcrafted Hamsa Earrings (Northern Road Collection ) and poised at our tiny table for 2 inside the middle of Boulder Coffee on Park, Jonelle scanned the local paintings. That’s what I used to do, she said. That was my life. Jonelle pointed to the blue, exaggerated portrait of the man with a long face. (Frank Sinatra?) Art like this. FIT, a rigorous program–to say the least–might have dried-out Jonelle’s original passion. But it infused her creativity.

WORK

From 2003 – 2011, Jonelle worked under DBA Poison Apple NYC, same jewelry line as Jonelle Maira Jewelry. While creating her line, Maira also worked for NYC jewelry designers. … We’re talking Alexia Crawford and Laila Rowe. Ironically, Maira mainly worked from a marketing perspective: photography, lookbooks, catalogs, web content. Conveniently, Maira infuses all of these skills into her own incredibly sleek website, complete with its own Lookbook. Since 2003, with jewelry in online boutiques such as Shop Lately and of course Etsy, Maira has undoubtedly established her jewelry.

Now, Jonelle Maira seeks to establish her name in the Rochester, NY scene. I found Jonelle through Second Storie Indie Market, the weekend long fair of artisans and crafts that happens ever November in Rochester, NY. I cannot wait to see more Jonelle Maira Jewelry around town and in our #shoplocal scene!

DESIGN

From sourcing materials to making trips. From selling online to updating web content. From organizing materials to making jewelry: Jonelle does it all, and Maira’s favorite piece is the design. There’s never much time for it, Maira explains. Most time gets allocated to photography and jewelry descriptions. (… Sign me up!)

The making of Jonelle Maira Jewelry fascinates me. With her pieces so beautiful, it’s hard to believe each stems from an actual, strategic, organized, process. From a production line. First, Maira creates an original sample. (Potentially those of which you see in JM Exclusives.) Next, she decides upon the steps. Finally, Maira divvies up the materials. She makes batches of each piece in stock piles large enough to fill wholesale and individual orders. The average time? About 30 minutes to 2 hours per jewelry item. Again: each earring, ring, necklace, bracelet you see are handmade by Maira, herself. This includes individual pieces. The curved arch in these earrings? Hand manipulated brass, each and every one.

These artful, almost spiritual, Collections realize a beautifully magical quality that intricately unites all of them while still maintaining distinct identities. Of course Maira doesn’t aim for this divinity. It just kind of happened, Maira explains of her organic process. Inspired by the natural materials she reclaims and the lives of the old she recycles, Maira creates so organically that all Jonelle Maira Jewelry breathes new life into each piece. The fragmented and discarded raw pieces Maira finds to the storybook of unified images she creates, is art. Each individual collection and The Collections as a whole speak their own stories.
